10 Basic Poker Concepts for Beginners
Goal: eliminate leaks, improve thinking and learning, and build the foundation for long-term success.
1. Learn GTO Basics
- Poker has a broken reward system: you can play perfectly and still lose.
- Don’t rely only on experience — you need a solid foundation.
- Understand: indifference points, minimum defense frequency (MDF), EV, exploit, etc.
- Knowing concepts > memorizing specific in-game calculations.
2. Threshold Hands
- The strongest hands we fold, and the weakest we call.
- For value bets — the weakest hand we bet for value.
- Example: BB vs BTN c-bet 75% pot:
- ❌ Fold: 2–9 without backdoors, J8s, J9s.
- ✅ Call: OESD, flush draws, combo draws.
- Sizing matters: vs 33% pot, defend wider.
- Use filters, grouping, and range visualization.
3. It’s Not About Your Hand — It’s About Your Range
- Frequency of specific hands is irrelevant.
- What matters is how balanced your range is:
- Enough value hands?
- Not too many bluffs?
4. Winning Pots Often ≠ Maximizing EV
- Players overvalue medium-strength hands, fearing being outdrawn.
- They fold +EV hands out of fear of losing.
- Example: frequently losing $10 but winning $100 occasionally can still be +EV.
- Focus on long-term profit, not short-term results.
5. Stop Overvaluing Big Cards
- AJo, KQo are not premium, especially postflop.
- Common mistake: not folding overpairs to a river raise.
- Premium preflop ≠ premium on the river.
6. Money Comes from the Nuts
- Most EV comes from premium hands.
- The rest are for balance.
- If you’re too tight, you won’t get paid.
- If you’re too loose, you’ll lose EV on bluffs.
7. Sharpen Flop Strategy
- Everything starts on the flop.
- Fastest way to improve win rate = develop automatic flop decisions.
- Use GTO Wizard training mode from flop to river.
8. Most Heuristics Are Lies
- Experience and intuition often mislead.
- A solver can confirm biases if used incorrectly.
- Don’t seek confirmation — seek to challenge misconceptions.
9. Variance Is Bigger Than You Think
- Coin flips: 6 heads in a row doesn’t change probabilities.
- Even over 100k hands, a winning player can be down.
- Accept swings as part of the game.
- Use variance calculators to understand real risks.
10. Don’t Overplay Medium-Strength Hands
- Medium-strength = pot control, not value-bet.
- Weak aggressive players have no showdown range.
- Polarize: strong hands for value, weak for bluffs.
- Medium hands = check-behind to realize equity.
