Aggressive Bet Sizing vs Recreational Players: Research Overview 1. Core Idea of the Research

This article summarizes research on optimal bet sizing versus recreational players, with a focus on how different lines across flop, turn and river affect expected value (EV).

The author used a detailed flop–turn–river popup versus recreational players and manually evaluated the EV of many different lines and sizings:

Flop/turn/river sizings:

33%, 50%, 75%, 100%, 125%, 150% pot

Branches:

Cheap “value” lines like: 33 → 75 → 75

All-in lines such as: 50 → 150 → push

Mixed branches like: half pot → overbet → push

For each hand category (set, top pair good kicker, top pair weak kicker, low two pair, draws, air) the author constructed EV tables across bet/fold/call/raise branches.

Main conclusion: Intuition often loses to raw EV. For the same hand, the difference between a “comfortable” line and an “optimal” aggressive line can be up to 2x in EV.

  1. Why Recreational Players Change the Strategy

The whole framework is tuned specifically for games versus recreational players:

They overcall with top pair and various draws

They donk and check–call draws a lot

They rarely check–raise the nuts

Their fold vs overbet is often around 60% but without dramatic overfolding

Because of this:

Bigger sizings with strong hands exploit their tendency to overcall

Overbets on turn and river generate very high EV when we are strong

Small flop bets (around 33%) with strong hands lead to severe under-realization

  1. General Strategic Principles vs Recreational Players

Avoid small flop bets (33%) with strong hands

Especially with sets and nut hands, 33% flop leads to much lower EV than starting at 50–75%.

Prefer 50–75% flop sizings with value

50% vs 33% may look similar on flop EV,

But by turn and river the pot is significantly bigger, so the value line prints much more money.

Use overbets on later streets with strong hands

Lines like 50 → 150 → push or 75 → 125 → push massively outperform cheap 33 → 75 → 75.

Board-dependent strategy

On drawy boards, the priority is to build the pot and charge draws.

On dry boards, the goal is still to play expensive branches with strong hands, but with slightly smaller starting sizes (50% rather than 75%).

  1. Pool Tendencies and Overbets

The research confirms that overbets are a powerful tool versus recreational players.

Overbet branches such as:

33 → 75 → overbet

50 → 150 → push

These work very well because:

Fold vs overbet ≈ 60% (no extreme overfolds)

When we have nuts or near-nuts, large pots = large EV

Practical takeaway: Versus recreational players, you should radically increase bet sizes with strong hands, especially on the flop and turn, and be ready to play for stacks on many boards.
