Alpha (Break-even Frequency)
What is Alpha?
Alpha — the break-even frequency at which a bet (or bluff) needs to succeed for its expected value (EV) to be zero.
Used for calculating:
- Optimal bluff frequency
- Required fold frequency vs a bet
- Balance between value bets and bluffs
Formula
For a bet:
Alpha = Risk / (Risk + Reward)
Where:
- Risk = bet size
- Reward = current pot size
Example
Player bets half pot (0.5 pot):
- Pot: 100
- Bet: 50
- Pot after bet: 100 + 50 = 150
- Alpha = 50 / (50 + 100) = 0.333 = 33%
➡ The bet must work at least 33% of the time to break even.

How to Apply
- Bluffing: If you think the opponent folds more often than Alpha → bet is +EV.
- Defending: If your hand wins more often than Alpha → call is +EV.
- Sizing: Adjusting bet size changes the required success frequency.
Practical Scenarios
Bluff
You bet 1 pot (100 into 100) → Alpha = 50%.
If opponent folds more than 50% → bluff is profitable.
Call
Opponent bets 33% pot → Alpha = 25%.
You need to win 25%+ to make a profitable call.
Important Notes
- Alpha ≠ hand equity.
- Alpha is the threshold between profitability and loss.
- Helps to quickly evaluate decisions and exploit weak opponents.
