BB Play Out of Position — Cold Call
BB Range Characteristics
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| Wide variety of boards to represent | Many weak hands dominated |
| Some hands connect to the nuts | Out of position — harder to realize EV |
Strategy Goal for BB
Exploit the opponent's under-defended range on boards where BB has a nut advantage.
One-Street Exploit
What is it?
An action on a single street (most often the flop) that creates fold equity without committing to further aggression:
- Check-raise bluff
- Turn probe bet
- Donk bet (rarely used)
👉 If called — often give up on later streets.
Key Metrics to Aim For
| Action | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Check-raise vs C-bet | > 20% |
| Probe bet turn and river | > 55% |
| Donk bet flop | > 15% (optional) |
| Donk bet turn | > 20% (optional) |
Building Check-Raise Frequency
- Value + all draws
- Bluff with gutshots, third pair, flush draws
- Pure air — on favorable structures
Ideal Boards for Bluff Check-Raises
| Board Type | Most Effective Against |
|---|---|
| Low coordinated | vs MP and later |
| Ace + 2 low cards with FD | vs MP (not EP) |
| Paired boards (low/high) | vs MP+ |
| High card + 2 low + FD | vs MP |
Probe Bets
Turn:
- If flop goes check-check, bet all hands without showdown value
- Size: 50–70% pot
- Exception: dry J+ boards
River:
- After turn check from PFR ➤ bet almost always if holding trash
- Exception: dry J+ boards (e.g., Q93r)
Example Bluff Lines
- BB call → flop check-raise bluff → fold turn without equity
- BB call → check flop, opponent checks → turn probe bet
- BB call → check-check → river overbet probe (if board favors BB)
Opponent Adjustments
| Type | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Active Regular | Increase bluff check-raises on boards with equity |
| Passive Regular | More turn/river probes, do not wait for bluffs |
| Recreational Player | Attack big after double checks, overbets are strong |
