Bluffing Postflop and Fold Equity
Main Idea
Poker profit consists of two parts: 1. Equity (your share of the pot at showdown)
2. Fold Equity (your profit from opponents folding)
Winning poker is impossible without understanding the other side of the coin — bluffing and Fold Equity. This is just as mathematically justified as value betting.
Definitions
Fold Equity (FE)
The probability that an opponent will fold to our bet/raise.
→ FE = % of their range that folds to our action.
Types of Bluff
| Type | Equity vs call | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pure bluff | < 10% | Complete air |
| Bluff with equity | 10–25% | Gutshot, 1 overcard |
| Semi-bluff | 25–50% | Flush draw, OESD |
Semi-bluffs are covered in the "Draw Postflop" section; here the focus is on the first two types.
Profit Formulas
1. Simplified bluff formula:
EV = Fold Equity − Breakeven %

Breakeven % (break-even point):
B / (Pot + B)
yaml Копировать Редактировать
| Sizing | Breakeven % |
|---|---|
| 25% | 20% |
| 30% | 23% |
| 50% | 33% |
| 70% | 41% |
| 100% | 50% |
| 120% | 54% |
→ If fold % is greater than breakeven %, you profit.
→ Profit = difference between Fold Equity and breakeven.
2. Full formula (for bluffs with equity):
EV = Fold Equity − Breakeven + (Equity × Realization Coefficient)
-
Equity realization coefficient: 0.5–0.7
-
Depends on position and opponent's aggression:
-
Passive opponent → closer to 0.7
-
Aggressive → closer to 0.5
-
Example Calculation
Situation:
- Bet 30% pot
- FE = 35%
- Breakeven = 23%
→ EV = 35 − 23 = +12% profit
If you have 12% equity and realize 50% of it:
→ Extra to EV = 12 × 0.5 = +6%
Total profit: 18%
Bluff-raise Efficiency Table
| Raise (x) | vs 33% Bet | vs 50% Bet | vs 67% Bet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5x | 40% FE | 45% FE | 50% FE |
| 3x | 43% FE | 49% FE | 55% FE |
| 4x | 50% FE | 55% FE | 62% FE |
The bigger the opponent's bet, the higher the profitability threshold and the fewer hands they fold.
Exploit Strategy
- Bluff-raises more often vs small sizings: B30, B50
- Against large bets (B70+): bluff less often → requires more FE, harder to achieve
Common Bluffing Mistakes
| Mistake | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Emotional bluff | Triggered by tilt or revenge, not based on EV |
| Narrow value representation | People don’t believe “representations”; structure and logic matter |
| Illogical sizing | Bluff should look like value |
| Bluff vs strong line | Aggression usually = strength, not weakness |
| Bluff on paired boards (esp. turn/river) | Too much slowplay and value in response |
| Bluff on dry boards vs opponent's check | Often capped pot-control hands with SDV (won’t fold) |
| Desperate bluffs | "Maybe he folds…" → Not mathematically justified |
Main Rule
Bluffing is an essential part of a winning strategy.
Not bluffing in profitable spots = same mistake as missing value bets.
Working with Flopzilla
- Mark which hands in opponent's range continue after your bet.
- Result:
- % of range that continues → 100 − this = Fold Equity.
- Calculate:
- EV by formula
- If needed — include your hand's equity.
Example:
- You have 8 9s on Kd Tc 2s
- Bet B30 → breakeven 23%
- If FE = 35%, EV = +12%
- If equity = 12%, realization = 50% → +6%
→ Total EV = +18%
