Common Preflop Mistakes
Introduction
- Goal: review frequent beginner mistakes in preflop play.
- Focus on:
- Acting first;
- Playing passively (limping);
- Calling too wide after opponent action.
Mistake 1: Limping from Early Position
- Common beginner leak: limp from EP.
- No fold equity is created.
- BB can check any hand — already invested 1 bb.
- Recommendation:
- EP → always open-raise;
- Limping should be an exception.
Mistake 2: Opening Too Wide from EP
- Some players open too wide without considering:
- Position;
- Stack dynamics (chip leaders behind);
- Number of opponents.
- Higher chance that someone behind has a strong hand.
- Play tighter from early positions, especially without advantage.
SB vs BB — Playing Against One Opponent
- Example: SB with K7o vs unknown BB.
- Already invested 0.5 bb, pot = 3.1 bb.
- Need to win < 20% for profitable play.
- K7o has ~55% vs random hand — strong defense.
- SB vs BB can defend up to 85% vs weak/passive BB.
Mistake 3: Calling an MP Open vs Early Position
- EP open with short stack = strong range.
- MP calls OOP with wide hand.
- Problems:
- Many opponents behind;
- Bad position;
- Open-raiser is strong.
- Better to fold and play only strong hands here.
Wide Opens from BU
- BU is best position for wide play:
- Always in position;
- Only 2 opponents behind, both OOP.
- Widest RFI strategy is on BU.
Mistake 4 Tight BB Defense
Players often fold too much in BB, underestimating hands like 87o versus late position opens.
Formula:
- Pot after open = SB (0.5 bb) + BB (1 bb) + Antes + Open Raise (X bb)
- Amount to call = X - 1 bb
- Equity to call = (Amount to call) / (Pot after call)
At 2 bb open in 9-max MTT, required equity ≈ 18%, so BB must defend wide; folding too tight loses EV.
Mistake 5: Calling 3-Bets with Trash
- Opening J8o may be fine, but calling a 3-bet with it is not.
- Reasons:
- 3-bets are often strong, especially from EP;
- Little fold equity;
- Hard to realize equity deep.
- At low stakes, few bluff 3-bets, especially OOP.
- Better to fold more often without stats.
Conclusions
Eliminating these 5 leaks can instantly improve win rate: 1. Limp from EP. 2. Too wide opens without reason. 3. Calling opens OOP vs strong ranges. 4. Narrow BB defense. 5. Calling 3-bets without a plan.
Always analyze: - Who opened; - How many players left to act; - Required win rate by pot odds.
This is the foundation for confident postflop play.
