GTO Basics
What is GTO?
GTO (Game Theory Optimal) is a style of play where:
- You are unexploitable.
- Any deviation by the opponent from optimal play worsens their results.
- You play a balanced strategy, mixing value bets, bluffs, and folds in the right proportions.
Main Goals of GTO
- Minimize losses against strong opponents.
- Balance ranges so your bet does not reveal whether you have value or a bluff.
- Avoid exploitation — especially important at high stakes.
- Play stable and resistant to aggression and opponent adjustments.
Key GTO Principles
| Principle | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Balance | Mixing value and bluffs in the correct ratio |
| Frequencies | Using randomized strategies (e.g., betting a hand 33% of the time) |
| Mixed strategies | Same hand can be played differently (bet/check/call/raise) |
| MDF | Minimum defense frequency — deny auto-profit to the opponent |
| Alpha | Bluff only if it works often enough |
How GTO is Built
-
Solvers (e.g., GTO Wizard, PioSolver): - Load a scenario: positions, bet sizes, ranges. - The algorithm finds an unexploitable strategy. - Outputs action frequencies and EV for each hand.
-
Hand categorization: - Value: strong hands for bet/raise. - Bluff: weak hands with blockers. - Middle: hands to play passively (check/call).
GTO Tools in Practice
| Tool | Application |
|---|---|
| Alpha | Determine required bluff success frequency |
| MDF | Minimum defense frequency vs a bet |
| Pot Odds | Required equity to call |
| EV | Expected value of an action |
| Ranges (RFI, 3-bet, call) | Base templates for building strategy |
Example: GTO Bluff in a 1 Pot Bet
- You bet 100 bb into a 100 bb pot.
- Alpha = 50% → bluff must succeed at least 50% of the time.
- To stay balanced:
- If you have 10 value combos
- You need max 10 bluff combos (1:1 ratio).
GTO ≠ Always the Best Style
| When to Use GTO | When to Exploit |
|---|---|
| Against strong regulars | Against recreational players |
| In unknown player pools | When you know specific leaks |
| In simulations and training | In real tournament situations |
Key Takeaway
GTO is a learning tool, not a dogma.
To win, you must understand when to apply GTO and when to exploit the field.
