Hidden Cost of Late Registration in PKO
Essence
In PKO tournaments, late registration reduces the value of the starting stack: the bounty pool decreases as players are eliminated, and the min-cash from the regular prize pool often does not cover the buy-in. Even if ITM percentage increases, the loss of bounty pool value and lack of stack covering make late entry -EV.
Core Principles
- The bounty prize pool (BPP) decreases steadily: each elimination reduces the pool, so each late entry buys a share of a smaller bounty bank. As a result, the starting stack is worth less.
- Min-cash in PKO is weaker: since ~50% of the buy-in goes into the bounty pool, payouts from the regular prize pool (RPP) are often ~0.75–1x buy-in. A min-cash without bounties gives negative ROI.
- Covering matters: late entrants are more often covered (larger stacks at the table cover them), making it harder to win bounties. Opponents benefit from targeting your bounty (their equity threshold is ~10–12% lower).
- Bounty decay model: formula by Tombos21 is used — BPP_remaining = BPP_start × (Field_share_remaining)^(buy-in_share_in_bounty, usually 0.5).
- Practical conclusion: in rooms where late registration closes with 30–35% of the field remaining, the bounty pool is reduced by ~40–45%, and the starting stack loses ≈14% of its value.
- Rare exception: ICM edge near the bubble can outweigh bounty loss only in extreme spots very close to ITM.
Table / Structure
| Field remaining | BPP change | Starting stack EV |
|---|---|---|
| 90% (10% out) | BPP ≈ −5% | — |
| 75% (25% out) | BPP ≈ −13% | EV ≈ −5% |
| 50% (50% out) | BPP ≈ −29% | EV ≈ −11% |
| 30–35% left | BPP ≈ −40…−45% | EV ≈ −14% |
Note: values are from a simulation of a 1,000-entry $100+$100 PKO and match a real $5+$5+$1 example, where with 33.3% of the field remaining, starting stack EV ≈ −14%.
Practical Usage
- With ~1/3 of the field left — late registration ≈ “minus 14% EV of starting stack” plus you are almost always covered: play very tight, but overall ROI still suffers.
- Grinding PKOs with re-entry — avoid late entries: bounties are already collected, min-cash is weak, and you are covered. Plan to play from the start to capture early bounties.
- Exception near the bubble: if structure and stage provide strong ICM boost (just a few orbits before ITM), late entry may be acceptable, but these are rare, model-specific spots.
