OOP — Out of Position Play
General Principles
- Playing out of position is a strategic disadvantage.
- Requires precise understanding of caller ranges and frequencies.
Starting Situation
- We open from MP1.
- CO calls.
- We play OOP postflop.
Core Strategy
- Narrow ranges.
- C-bet frequency depends on position.
- Mandatory adjustment to opponent type.
Approximate C-Bet Frequencies
| Position | vs BTN | Flop C-Bet | Turn | River |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UTG | 75% | 75% | 60% | 60% |
| MP | 65% | 65% | 60% | 60% |
| CO | 50% | 50% | 60% | 60% |
Caller Ranges by Type
[[Active Regular]]
- Wide range: AXs, broadway, connectors, gappers.
- Ready to bluff after your check.
[[Passive Regular]]
- Narrower, rarely plays 7–8 offsuit.
- Almost never plays K2s–K3s.
- Plays more for showdown.
[[Recreational Player]]
- Range poorly position-aware.
- Many "pretty" hands — AJo, QTs, KTo.
- Frequent overbluffing and overfolding.
What to Bet on the Flop?
Value
- Overpairs
- Top pair + good kicker
- Sets and two pairs
Semi-Bluff
- Draw hands, gutshots + backdoors
- Second pairs that need protection
Check
- Trash without equity
- Top pair with weak kicker (vs reg)
- Weak second pairs (vs narrow range)
Check-Call & Check-Raise
Check-Call
- Top pair weak kicker
- Draw hands
- Pair below top card
Check-Raise
- vs Recreational: only value or strong draws (8+ outs)
- vs Regulars: value + semi-bluff (gutshot + backdoor, etc.)
- Use if Bet vs missed C-Bet > 60%
Barreling
vs Regulars
- 2 barrels: 33% → 75–100%
- 3 barrels: 33% → 44–55% → 120%
vs Recreational
- 3 barrels: 33% → 33–44% → 66–80%
- Higher fold rate on the river
