Outs to Equity, Pot Odds, and GTO Decisions

1. Outs to Equity (Rule of 2 and 4 and where it breaks)
On the flop: - Roughly Equity ≈ Outs x 4% to the river (two streets) - Roughly Equity ≈ Outs x 2% to the turn (one street)
On the turn: - Roughly Equity ≈ Outs x 2% to the river
More precise formulas (without using the rule):
Flop to river: 1 - ((47 - O) / 47) x ((46 - O) / 46)
Turn to river: O / 46
where O = number of outs.
Important caveat (a common mistake in videos): "I am calling purely for a flush or straight" is not equal to your real equity.
- Reverse implied odds exist (non-nut flushes or straights).
- Some outs may be dirty (they give you a hand but give the opponent a better one).
- Sometimes you also have overcards or a pair as additional outs, but they are not always clean.
2. Pot Odds (bank odds). The formula is simpler than in the video
If the opponent bets b into a pot of p, and you have to call b:
Required equity (break-even) = b / (p + 2b)
This is the same as "risk / (risk + reward)".
Mini table (worth memorizing):
- Bet 1/3 pot -> need about 20%
- Bet 1/2 pot -> need 25%
- Bet 2/3 pot -> need about 28.6%
- Bet 3/4 pot -> need about 30%
- Bet pot -> need 33.3%
- Overbet 150% -> need 37.5%
- Overbet 200% -> need 40%
3. Main GTO upgrade: not only call or fold, but call versus raise
Even if a call is negative EV based on pot odds, a raise can be positive EV because of fold equity.
For bluffs and semi-bluffs:
Alpha (required folds) = Risk / (Risk + Reward)
where: - Risk = your bet size - Reward = current pot (before your bet)
Then:
MDF (minimum defense frequency of the opponent) = 1 - Alpha
The conclusion: Pot odds math for calling is only half of the picture. In GTO you often choose a line that adds fold equity.
4. MTT specifics: pot odds are not the decision when ICM exists
In tournaments, "25% by pot odds" is often not enough, because chips are not linear in dollar EV.
Under ICM, required equity for calling an all-in increases (through bubble factor or risk premium).
Result: The same spots that are a call by pot odds can become a fold on the bubble or at a final table, especially if you risk elimination.
5. What to keep from the video and how to train
- Rule of 2 and 4 plus the required equity table by sizing are must-have tools.
Training: - 50 spots per day: outs -> approximate equity -> required equity -> decision. - Separately, 50 spots of call versus shove or raise, taking into account fold equity and blockers.
If you want, send one concrete hand (positions, effective stack, MTT stage or ICM, sizing, board, action), and I will give a GTO line with continuation and raising ranges, sizing, and EV logic.
