Polarization of Ranges
(Range shape as a key to preflop strategy)
Essence
Polarization of ranges is a concept describing the “shape” (morphology) of the range of hands with which a player takes an action (raise, 3-bet, call, etc.). Instead of breaking down each hand individually, it is important to understand the overall “silhouette” of the range: what hands it includes — only strong, only medium, a mix of extremes, or everything. Conscious control of polarization allows for building strategies effectively and adapting to different opponents and the metagame.
Key Principles
-
Types of range shapes:
- Polarized: only very strong + very weak hands, few medium-strength hands.
- Linear: “top-down”, only the best hands (from strongest to weakest without gaps).
- Condensed: mostly medium-strength hands, few strong and weak hands.
- Merged: mix of strong, medium, and weak hands (between polarized and linear).
-
When and how to use:
- Polarized: when choosing between fold/call/raise, more often in position, to fully exploit strong and weak hands.
- Linear: in a 3-bet/fold strategy (no calls), playing only the best hands.
- Condensed: when calling, especially when premium hands have been moved to the 3-bet range; only strong medium-strength hands remain.
- Merged: hybrid shape — used when the opponent’s action can be met with both folds and calls.
-
Adapting to the metagame:
- The more you expect calls, the more linear/condensed the range.
- The more you expect raises, the more sense it makes to polarize the range.
Table: Range Shapes and Typical Situations
| Shape | Example Spot | Range Composition | Player’s Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polarized | 3-bet BB vs SB open | Only top hands + bluffs | Strong hands and “trash”, no middle |
| Linear | CO open raise | Only best hands | Opens top hands only |
| Condensed | BU call vs HJ open | Only medium-strength | 3-bets premium, calls medium |
| Merged | 3-bet BB vs BU open | Top, medium, weak | Mixed strategy |
Examples of Use
- When BB 3-bets vs SB: use polarization — strong hands and bluffs to maximize EV against a narrow open range.
- When CO opens: use a linear range, selecting only the top hands without unusual hands.
- When BU calls vs HJ: only strong medium-strength hands — suited connectors, pocket pairs, strong broadways (condensed).
- When BB 3-bets vs BU: the range merges — includes strong, medium, and bluffs, as BU opens wide and calls often.

Mini-summary:
The shape of the range determines optimal preflop strategy: polarization — when expecting raises, linear — when expecting calls, condensation — when premiums are moved to 3-bet.
