Risk Advantage in Tournament Poker

ICM · updated 2026-03-08

Assessing a player's ability to apply ICM pressure on another player

Essence

Risk Advantage is a modern tournament poker concept reflecting the asymmetry of ICM risks between players. It measures how much more one player can pressure another due to a lower "risk cost" of losing chips.

When Player A has a lower risk premium than Player B against them, A has Risk Advantage. This allows A to attack B's range more aggressively.

Key Principles

Table / Structure

Scenario Risk premium A Risk premium B Risk Advantage
All 200 bb (tournament start) 1.8% 1.8% 0%
