Small Blind: Complete Strategy
The small blind (SB) is one of the most difficult and unprofitable positions at the poker table. Even the best players lose from this position. The main goal is to minimise losses: from -50 BB/100 (if folding 100%) to -15 BB/100 — an excellent target.
Preflop Strategy SB vs BB
Approaches to Strategy
- Raise Only — exploitative approach vs tight players and at micro stakes (up to ABI 5). Allows taking pots with auto-profit.
- Mixed Approach — some hands raise, some limp, some fold. Balanced strategy suitable vs regulars with a polar range.
- Limp Only — used vs aggressive maniacs in BB with high iso rate (>50%).
Dividing the Range into 6 Groups
- Limp/raise → call iso/3-bet or 4-bet.
- Raise only → call or 4-bet vs 3-bet.
- Limp → call iso.
- Raise → jam vs 3-bet with stacks <40 BB, jam low pairs up to 23 BB.
- Complete → fold vs iso. Occasionally bluff 3-bet with Kx, Qx, Jx.
- Fold.
VPIP Guidelines
- vs Regulars: 80–85%
- vs Recreational: 95–100% (strong hands — raise, weak — limp)
- Goal: SB fold ≤ 20%
Postflop Strategy in BvB
Playing postflop from SB vs BB is extremely difficult due to being OOP.
General Recommendations
- GTO uses a 50% check / 50% bet strategy.
- In practice — simplified polar strategy:
- Value: top pair+ (J9, 99, AA)
- Semi-bluffs: strong flush draws (T8s, QTs), gutshots + backdoors
- Showdown value/control: A4s, K8s, Q9s, 88
Barrel Lines
- 33% — 50% — 120%
- 33% — 80–100% — 90%
- 44% — 55–60% — 120%
- 33–50% — x/x — 60–80%
- x/x — 40–50% — 68–80%
Check-Raise
- Value: TP+, two pairs, sets
- Bluff: strong draws and combo draws
- Size: 3x–4.5x, check-fold ≤ 20% of range
Limp Strategy
On the Flop
- Bet 1 bb (need 24% folds, actually get ~40%)
- Turn — 50%
- Check/call — hands with equity or showdown value
- vs Regulars — can check-raise wider (exploit their weak betting range vs check)
Iso and Complete vs Limpers
Iso
- Range: ~20%, especially from posts without position
- Sizing: 4.5 bb + 1.5–2 bb per limper
- Preflop sizing by stack:
- Freezeout / KO: 50 bb+ — weight towards strong hands
- Occasionally expand range exploitatively
Complete
- Profitable even with trash (e.g., 72o has ~20% equity)
- Exploit vs BB: average iso in the field is 33–35%, should be 45–49%
Folding SB = -50 BB/100
Completing even trash reduces losses to -20…+20 BB/100
Squeeze and Overcall from SB
If before you:
- Raise + Call — can:
- Overcall (narrow range)
- Squeeze (effective stacks 30+ bb)
Example:
- SB vs raise HJ + call CO
- Squeeze non-all-in with stacks 30–50 bb
- Postflop play as in OOP 3-bet pot
Conclusion
- SB play is difficult but learnable.
- Do not be afraid to use limp/raise strategies.
- Regularly review hands and understand who you are playing against.
- Combine GTO and exploitative lines depending on the field.
- Use check-raise for value, not bluffs, vs weak opponents who fold too much.
