Thin Value Bet — Postflop
Goals of a Thin Value Bet
- Get value from hands that won’t call a large bet.
Example: draws, medium pairs, third pairs. - Induce a bluff.
A small sizing may look like weakness and provoke a shove from a draw or weak hand. - Set up an all-in on the river (turn action).
Small bet with a strong hand → create SPR < 1 on the river. - Pot control with value.
Bet small to get paid without inflating the pot too much.
Thin Value Lines
In Position
- Line: call flop → small bet turn → small bet river.
Get value from controlled hands, commit the opponent by the river. - Line: bet flop → small bet turn → small bet river.
If many draws and we have a strong hand, set up for a value shove or block on the river.
Out of Position
- Line: check flop → check turn → small probe bet river.
If the opponent is capped, extract thin value.
Sizing Choices
| Situation | Sizing | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Opponent has medium/weak hands | 15–40% | Value without scaring them off |
| Need protection from draws | ≥ 60% | Deny implied odds |
| Want to look like a bluff | 100%+ | Polarized range, provocation |
| Many value hands willing to pay | 65–85% | Maximize value |
| Opponent controlling pot | 50–60% | Expand calling range |
Factors in Choosing Sizing
- Strength of opponent’s range.
- Need for protection against draws.
- Does the opponent perceive our range as strong or weak?
- Opponent’s showdown tendency.
Example Situations
- Playing a set on a dry board: check → thin bet → all-in.
- Opponent checks turn → weak equity → get value on the river.
- We have top pair, but the river is scary → thin bet hoping for a call from a medium hand.
- We have weak value (e.g., third pair) → bet 20–30% vs weak range.
Mistakes
- Too thin bets vs a range willing to pay more.
- Slowplaying where betting is needed.
- Large bet where only a narrow range will call.
Adaptation Strategies
- Vs calling stations — bet larger for value.
- Vs nits — use thin bets.
- On draw-heavy boards — bet bigger to protect equity.
- In situations where our line looks like a bluff — overbet for value.
Key Insight
Value strength ≠ bet size.
The key is knowing which hands can pay us and adjusting sizing to them.
Better to win 7 bb from tens than bet 15 bb and only get called by a jack.
