Turn Play
General Principle
- Main sizing on the turn: 70% pot — used for value, bluffs, and draws.
- Alternative exploit sizing: 50% pot — applied under certain conditions.
- Delayed c-bet / pot control: 30–35% (rare sizing for special spots).
- Overbet: 100–120% — strong tool vs capped ranges.
Why 70% is the Main Sizing
- Players fold more often to 70% than 50% on the turn → higher fold equity.
- More profitable for both bluffs and value (on most textures).
- Allows value extraction from draws and vulnerable hands.
Tip: To simplify your strategy — use 30% on the flop, 70% on the turn, 50% on the river.
When to Use 50% on the Turn
For Value:
- When no need to protect from draws (dry board).
- Opponent has many medium/weak hands that won’t call 70%.
For Bluff:
- On very scary turn cards (e.g., Ace or Queen on a low board).
- When increasing sizing won’t boost fold equity (opponent folds or calls anyway).
When to Use 30–35%
- Delayed c-bet after checking flop.
- Setting up river all-in in low SPR.
- Block bet out of position to prevent opponent from betting big.
Overbet (100–120%) — Max Exploit
When to Apply:
- Flop checked through + turn checked → opponents capped on value.
- Against medium/weak hand → big sizing to fold them out.
Avoid on scary cards like A/K/Q that could improve the opponent.
Also Used For:
- Vulnerable value hands (small two pairs) → protect from draws and get paid.
Example Situations
- Value with QQ on 8-9-T board: Turn J → bet 50% to get value from a nine without scaring them off.
- 66 on a drawy board: Bet 50% to get value from weak aces and flush draws.
- Bluff after scary card (King on turn): Bet 50% — enough to fold out many hands.
- Delayed c-bet after flop check: Bet 30–35% to fold out high cards and gutshots, deny equity realization.
Turn Sizing Summary
| Situation | Recommended Sizing | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Main strategy | 70% pot | Standard for value, bluff, draw |
| Alternative in dry spots | 50% pot | Exploit for value or bluff vs capped range |
| Block / protection / delayed c-bet | 30–35% pot | Prevent aggression / realize equity |
| Overbet vs capped range | 100–120% pot | Steal from capped range / protect vs draws |
Implementation Tips
- Take notes and review before sessions.
- Automate bet sizings — set 4 buttons: 30%, 50%, 70%, 120%.
- Don’t be afraid to bet smaller to extract value.
- Use big bets when you want to fold out many hands.
