Concept

In optimal poker strategy, it’s important to maintain a mathematically sound balance between value bets and bluffs. This balance depends on your bet size and the street you’re on. The concept of Leverage explains why there are always more bluffs on the flop than on the river, and why some bluffs must “give up” on later streets (give up frequency).
Understanding these terms prevents you from being exploited and helps maximize EV.

1. Value-to-Bluff Ratio

Definition:
The percentage ratio between hands you bet for value and hands you bet as bluffs when polarized.

Formula:
% Bluffs = Opponent’s pot odds (equity they need to call breakeven).
% Value = 1 – % Bluffs

Example:
You bet 1/2 pot (bet = 1, pot = 2 → final pot = 3). Opponent’s pot odds = 1/3 ≈ 33%. So:

Application: - Larger bets (overbets) → higher bluff ratio allowed. - Smaller bets → lower bluff ratio.


2. Polarized Range

Definition:
A range containing only very strong hands (nuts) and very weak hands (bluffs) — no medium-strength hands.

Example: - On the river with strong value (set, straight) or pure air (blocker bluffs). - No medium pairs — you either have a strong hand or a bluff.

When to use: - With large bets (overbet, shove) to maximize pressure.


3. Leverage (Multi-street Effect)

Definition:
The “amplifying” effect of pressure from the threat of future large bets. The more streets remain, the more you can bluff early (flop, turn) because some bluffs will later be given up.

Example: - You bet pot on flop, pot on turn, then all-in on river. Bluff frequency shrinks street by street: many bluffs on flop, few on river.

Conclusion: - More bluffs are allowed early; some will give up later.


4. Give Up Frequency

Definition:
The percentage of bluffs that must be given up on the next street to maintain range balance.

Example: - If you pot-bet the turn, you must give up ~33% of those bluffs on the river (turn pot odds = 33%).

Application: - If an opponent never gives up enough, they’re overbluffing and exploitable.


5. Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF)

Definition:
The minimum call frequency to avoid giving the opponent automatic profit from bluffs.

Formula:
MDF = 1 – (Bet / (Pot + Bet))

Example: - Bet = 1, Pot = 2 (half-pot bet): MDF = 1 – (1/(2+1)) = 0.67 → defend at least 67% of range.


6. Indifference Principle

Definition:
If you keep the correct value-to-bluff ratio, your opponent is indifferent to calling or folding bluff catchers: EV of either action = 0.


7. EV Reference Point

Note:
Fold EV is conventionally 0, but in multi-street hands, it’s more accurate to reference EV to the starting pot/stack when evaluating each street.


8. Pot Odds

Definition:
Bet-to-total-pot ratio after calling — determines minimum equity needed for breakeven call.

Formula:
Pot odds = Bet / (Pot + Bet)
